Its Friday!!! Lets do a BLog! :)

So right now, I am sitting at my desk, listening to Vanessa have a “debate” with our volunteer coordinator about Football and the Stoke vs Man City game on the 13th. You see, she is a city girl, and well he is a born and bred stoke boy. So it is rather amusing…….

But anyway – my blog!....

So in the past few weeks, we have welcomed a new intake of students; all of which I hope are settling in well, and not feeling too home sick! But we have shown them where to shop for food and stuff, so at least they won’t be going hungry!!!

The Fashion show preparations are well under way! We have had three rehearsals & students are well and truly getting into strutting their stuff!! …. The scary thing is that the show is only 5weeks away!!!
But we have a great student team managing the event, and I think it will as big and maybe better than last years! J

Yesterday (28th Jan) I was put through some Social Media Training….. I am pretty confident when it comes to Email, Facebook, Myspace (back in the day) and even dabbled in a bit of Bebo (never really got that one) But yesterday I was trained in the wonders of Twitter – and how to tweet, and how I can incorporate it into work!! I can even tweet by texting! Talk about accessible! I was shown what to ‘#’ about, and what all the ‘@’ mean….. to be honest I am still a bit confused about it…. But I’m sure over time, I’ll learn understand. Haha – still all about Facebook to me though. I understand it – its simple!

……and! Most excitingly of all. Thoughts are turning towards the Summer Ball! We have released a questionnaire to see exactly what you expect from your end of year event. And hopefully – the student focus groups and planning will get into full swing over the next couple of weeks!

Tim's Officer Report

Happy New Year everyone and welcome to 2010! I’d like to start this month’s report to Council by welcoming our online readers. One of the things I have done since the last Council meeting is to set up a new Executive blog which we can all contribute to by e-mail. I’m sending this report to it, so it will appear as an entry. I am hoping that, given the ease with which we can update it, that it will become a more active communication tool than blogs of old.

Although we’ve had an Emergency Council Meeting since the By-Elections, I have not yet had to opportunity to formally welcome our new officers. I would like to do that now and offer them my congratulations on their success. They have of course joined Council at a challenging time for the Students’ Union and I look forward to their contributions over the coming months.

Coming up, we have the Elections. Learning from past experience and capitalising on the fact that, this year, I am not running, I hope to be highly pro-active in the promotion and organisation of the Elections. Steerings has a draft election timetable to which we are currently working and, although the elections are relatively early this year, it leaves us plenty of time to get things set up and publicised.

In the coming week, I, along with our Media Development Intern, Tommy Hill, will be producing ‘Day in the Life of...’ videos for each of the FTOs. These are intended to aid in the communication of Union achievements and also act as a promotion tool for the elections. These will be posted on the Union website and on this blog within the next few days.

I have taken the somewhat bold decision to publish my Action Plan along with this report. My Action Plan is a document written in collaboration with the Central Services Manager and with input from other Officers and staff. It sets out quantifiable objectives to be achieved in the remainder of my term in office. This will give Council the opportunity to see what I am supposed to be doing and to hold me to account if I fail to do so.

There endeth my report for this month. I shall write again in advance of the next Council meeting.

All the best,

Tim Robinson
Communications Officer

My First Blog of The Year...and its all covered in SNOW!

Happy New Year!! We are now in 2010!! As if the Millennium was a decade ago,Time really does fly!

So far, the only thing the New Year seems to have brought is SNOW!!! It is everywhere!!!.....except really in Stoke. Here we have badly gritted roads, and ice. All day I have been watching the news show pictures of places all over the country with over a foot of snowfall, and life coming to a standstill!! One little shop had run out of bread!!!
What is even worse, is that it is still set to get more snowy and Icy.
Facebook status’ all over Christmas and New Year have been about people playing in the snow, or getting sick of the snow…..I have had no snow…L.. Everytime I get to a place, the snow has melted. At my family home for Christmas it was inches thick…..until the morning I am due to arrive and the sun comes out and melts it! L I haven’t had a chance to play or get sick of the snow…..just got to walk through the nasty grey mush!
Getting away from the snow, and into the Union…It looks like I am going to be extremely busy over the next couple of months! Coming up, we have the Diversity Fashion Show, Staffs got Talent, VARSITY! And of course the planning and execution of our biggest event of the year, The Summer Ball!! J
Well I hope the New Year is starting off as well as it can be for you all, and good luck with any Assignments or Exams you might have at the beginning of the semester.
I wish you well! And will see you around J

Happy New Year!!!

The New Group Blog

Dsc_0510

Well, we've tried individual blogs, we've tried Twitter, we've tried video blogs and, I think it's fair to say, we've all been rubbish at updating them. Some of us have posted sporadically, others never, but none of us are what you might call 'prolific' bloggers.

So, here we have a group blog. Anything that any of us writes will appear on it and, hopefully, the desire to have the most recent post will yield some friendly rivalry and a higher post rate.

Check back for new posts (hopefully) soon.

All the best,

Tim Robinson
Communications Officer
